A Case Study of a 16-Year-Old Girl Participating in the NCS Programme at Womenzone
Introduction:
National Citizen Service (NCS) is a transformative experience designed for young people aged 16-17 in the United Kingdom. This case study aims to explore the journey of a 16-year-old girl, Areeba, who participated in an NCS local community experience. It highlights the positive impact of the experience on her personal growth, leadership skills, and community engagement.
Background:
Areeba is a studious and ambitious young person studying A – levels at a school, expressed her interest in participating in NCS as it aligned with her goals for personal development. The NCS experience at WomenZone focuses on three core strands: Politics, Sports/Physical Activity, and social action. It offers young people the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn new skills, and make a difference in their communities.
During the political phase of the NCS experience, Areeba took part in the Politics workshop, this developed her understanding of the political landscape in the UK, this included a debating workshop and a visit to No 10 Downing Street!
Areeba also took part in a series of self-defence workshops and attended an activity day at Doe Park. She participated in various outdoor activities, such as kayaking, raft building and team-building exercises. These activities encouraged Areeba to step out of her comfort zone, overcome challenges, and develop her self-confidence.
One of the core aspects of this NCS local community experience is engaging in social action projects. Areeba, along with her team, identified a social issue in their community and designed a project to address it. They chose to focus on a local project that supports refugees and decided to spend time with the group and raise money for an afternoon tea. Areeba has also volunteered with the playscheme at WomenZone.
Impact and Growth:
The NCS experience had a profound impact on Areeba’s personal growth and development. She emerged as a more confident, empathetic, and socially conscious individual. The experience provided her with opportunities to enhance her leadership skills, broaden her horizons, and develop a sense of social responsibility.
Conclusion:
This case study highlights the transformative journey of a 16-year-old girl, Areeba, who participated in NCS. Through the various phases, Areeba experienced personal growth, developed leadership skills, and actively contributed to her community.
